Reflection on Formative assessment

M5U1A3 Reflection on Formative Assessment
Qinqin Xiao

In the Module 5, activity 1. Lots students give me good suggestion about the Formative assessment.

I read all the comments and descriptions on it and made lots of changes.

I feels that the first work did not give lots of explanation about the formative assessment. So I add all details on it.

Here is the changes which I made

2.Three Formative assessments:

2.1  Pre-test for Language learner in high school
I am a high school Chinese teacher in Public school in USA. Before the students
come to Chinese class, they are have different experience in learning Chinese even
they are the same age and same grade. Some students maybe know how to speak
but know nothing about writing, Where Else maybe another students are totally have
no idea about  chinese at all.So the pre-test and questioning and Observation are
very important for separating them into different level classes.

Questioning and Observation: I will ask them to answer some simple questions in
Chinese to decide their levels or understand the oral languages. If they already know
Chinese ,I will give some pre-test about their writing level.
Knowing the students levels is  very helpful in teaching. The teaching method and
materials are all depends on their own levels.
How to use in future teaching based on the assessment?
Based on the pretest, I will understand the students’ language level both their oral
and writing. The students will have different group and level number now. The similar
level students will stay on the same groups. So the class teaching and materials will
based on their own levels.

For special students’ need, I will ask suggestion from the special teachers. When I get
the professional suggestion, I will follow the instruction to guild the special students.
For example, if the students have some disability in handwriting, I will give him/her
some special materials (like Plasticine or others drawing materials)for making a
writing pretest.

Here is one website I will use for the pretest for students.

2.2 Peer/self assessment

Peer and self assessment help to create a learning community within the classroom.  When
students are involved in criteria and goal setting, self evaluation becomes a logical step in the
learning process.  Students become metacognitive and are more aware of their personal
strengths and weaknesses. With peer assessment students begin to see each other as
resources for understanding and checking for quality work against previously determined criteria.
I can examine the self assessments and the peer assessments and identify students' strengths
and weaknesses.

I used Peer/ self assessment for students presentation  and their faceback about it.
It is a good way to record students’ Feedback and all students will involve in the presentation.

Self assessment will be using some software and website to assessment themselves.
So the students will know very well how about their levels and try to improve themselves.

Checklist of Peer assessment:

3. Online and offline assessment tools

Here is one website I will use for the pretest for students.

2. Checklist for the peer assessment offline (this form will used in the presentation)

How to use this form? This form will give to students when doing the presentation for
the peer assessment. The score:5 means perfect, 4 means good job need
improvement,3 means not achieved, 2 means failed. When one group or student is
doing  the assessment, the other students use this form and give feedback about the
presentation.

For the self assessment, I use a phone app named “YOUHANZI” .
I registered as a teacher, all the students already downloaded this app on their
smartphone, and joined my class. I will type the new vocabulary and sentence on the
app. It will automatically have the  test, So the students can open the app and review
the new words and sentence and see whether they already know the knowledge.
