Pre-Assessment for Differentiation

                                                 Module 5 Unit 4 Activity 1

                                                           By Qinqin Xiao

Grade: High school

Subject: Chinese

Learning Objectives:

Greeting and Making friends In Chinese.

Introduction:
Students are high school students from Grade 9- grade 12. They are all native English speaks. Some of students are beginner for learning Chinese. Others maybe have some basic knowledge about Chinese.
They have to pronounce correctly and using the correctly tone in Chinese and understand the meaning of their partner's Chinese.
All the students are native English speakers, but their pronunciation are different, Some students muscle seems improved by other languages or dialect, they are easier to pronounce correct the hard part of Chinese. Some other students seems need more practice their muscle of the mouth for pronounce the correct sounds. Some students seems know some vocabulary about the topic. Others are totally new for learning.

Pre-assessment:

I usually use three different kinds of pre-assessments for students.
First: KWL chart. K for what I had known, W for what I want to know, L for what I learned. In the K - what I had known part, students will write down what they already known about the topic.Students will write Kwhat they already know about greeting and making friends or any kind of culture about chinese.

Second, I will use online test for test students knowledge. The online test will know the result immediately. It is very good tools for test the language skills for new students. The online programs will have a video about the making friends in Chinese. After the video, they are some questions about the pronunciation and understanding. The online test I will use Youhanzi

Third, I will use off-line assessment to test the knowledge, like quiz which I designed for special level students. Because the paper quiz is designed by myself and also by the students' personal knowledge, So it is good way to know which part need to improvement and help them success in future. Sometimes, some students will transfer from other class to Chinese class, I will try to know some information about the students and design some special quiz for this kind of students to know their level.

After evaluating the assessment, I will determine that there are:
1.     The 5 students who answered most, including the most difficult, of the pre-assessment questions correctly
2.     The 12 students who have some knowledge about the topic as shown in their score, but need to develop higher order thinking skills
3.     The 5 students who appear to have limited knowledge about the topic, of which 3 are struggling with language and are at different reading levels and 2 students who have little to no comprehension of the topic and need to be tested further for special needs.

Differentiated strategies for the three groups
1.(First group)
1.    The 5 students who answered most, including the most difficult, of the pre-assessment questions correctly
Strategy: Reading and writing the Chinese characters
Due to the Chinese character is the hardest part for learning Chinese, I would give them another reading material with similar or higher difficulty level and let them write at least five Chinese characters. The five students in this Group have to assess with each others.

2. Second group:

2.    The 12 students who have some knowledge about the topic as shown in their score, but need to develop higher order thinking skills
Strategy: Using online apps and online website to help them, so they can catch up and understand very quickly
I will upload the words and sentence which they have to know into the Youhanzi or Quizlet website, So the students can use the app and website to self-study and self-assessment.
They will quickly know whether they passed or not.

3.Third group:
The 5 students who appear to have limited knowledge about the topic, of which 3 are struggling with language and are at different reading levels and 2 students who have little to no comprehension of the topic and need to be tested further for special needs.
3.1 Three students are struggling with language and are at different reading levels

3.1 Strategy: Flash card and translate into English
As students who have different in reading, I will translate all the content into English and then help them finish the task.
I will also use flash card to make sure students have no difficulty in new vocabulary.

3.2 Two students who have little to no comprehension of the topic and need to be tested further for special needs

Strategy:
As for the 2 who needs further test for special needs. I will ask help from the special licensed teacher for help.
Actually, I already got some information from the special students, some of them need extra times to finish the assessment, some students need more personal tutor. and some need to give a lower level assessment. They are different and personal. Get the professional suggestion about those two students from special licensed teachers.
